Summary
In this article, you will learn why 10DLC (10-digit long code) is required for sending text messages to patients from your practice. 10DLC is a US carrier and regulatory standard for business (A2P) SMS. Barti uses it so your appointment reminders, intake form links, and other messages are delivered reliably and stay compliant.
Important Note: US carriers can block or filter SMS sent from unregistered numbers. Completing 10DLC registration (handled during Barti onboarding) ensures your practice's messages reach patients.
1. What is 10DLC?
10DLC means 10-digit long code—a standard local phone number (e.g. (555) 123-4567) used to send SMS. In the US, when a business sends texts to customers or patients (called A2P—application-to-person messaging), carriers and industry rules require that business to register its Brand and Campaign through The Campaign Registry (TCR). That process is 10DLC registration.
2. Why is 10DLC needed?
- Carrier requirements: Major US carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) require 10DLC registration for business SMS. Unregistered traffic can be blocked or heavily throttled, so your messages may not reach patients.
- Consumer protection: 10DLC helps reduce spam and fraud by tying messages to a verified business. Patients can see who is messaging them and how to opt out (e.g. reply STOP).
- Compliance: The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA) and carriers set the rules. Non-compliance can lead to blocked messages or fines.
- Trust and deliverability: Registered, verified business messaging is more likely to be delivered and trusted by recipients.
3. What does Barti do for 10DLC?
- Registration: Barti works with Twilio to complete 10DLC registration for your practice during onboarding. This ties your organization (and, when applicable, your business entity/EIN) to a registered Brand and Campaign so your SMS is compliant.
- Compliance disclaimer: When a patient receives their first text from your practice (e.g. an intake form link or reminder), they may also receive a one-time compliance message. That message explains how your practice will use the number and includes opt-out instructions (e.g. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out). This is required for US SMS and is sent automatically only once per phone number.
- Timing: 10DLC registration can take up to a few weeks depending on your plan and carrier review. For details, see Barti Onboarding Integration Timelines.
