How do I see a patient's intake answers and history from inside an exam?
Quick answer
Exam sections show a View Intake or View History link in their header. Click it and the patient sidebar opens to the matching tab and scrolls straight to that section's answer or history — without leaving the exam.
Who this is for
Providers and technicians documenting an exam who need to check what the patient reported on their intake form, or compare a value against the patient's prior records, without navigating away and losing their place.
Before you start
Availability: These links are rolling out gradually and may not be turned on for your practice yet. If you don't see them, contact Barti Support.
You must be working in an exam — either an active exam or a finalized one.
View Intake only shows something if the patient has submitted an intake form. See How do I send and manage intake forms in Barti?.
The patient sidebar is the right-hand column of the exam. If it's collapsed, the link still opens it.
Steps
Check what the patient reported on their intake form
1. Open the exam and find a section that came from the intake form — for example Chief Complaint, Allergies, Review of Systems, or Medical History.
2. Click View Intake in that section's header.
3. The patient sidebar opens to the Intake tab, expands the patient's most recent submission, and scrolls to that section's answer.
4. Read the answer, then click back into the exam to keep documenting. Nothing is copied into the exam — the link is read-only.
Compare a value against the patient's history
1. Open the exam and find a section with history available — Glasses Rx, Contacts Rx, IOP, or Axial Length.
2. Click View History in that section's header.
3. The patient sidebar opens to the matching tab — Rx History for prescriptions, Clinical History for IOP and axial length — and scrolls to that measurement's history.
4. Compare against what you're entering, then click back into the exam.
What you'll see when it works
The patient sidebar opens on the right, already on the correct tab — you don't have to pick the tab yourself.
The view scrolls to the section you clicked from, so the relevant answer or history is on screen.
For View Intake, the patient's newest intake submission is expanded automatically.
Your exam entries are untouched. Both links only display information; they never write to the exam.

Troubleshooting
Why don't I see a View Intake or View History link in my exam?
Three possibilities. First, the feature is still rolling out and may not be enabled for your practice yet — contact Barti Support to check. Second, not every exam section has one; only the sections listed above do. Third, the exam must be open for a specific patient.
Why did View Intake open the intake form at the top instead of scrolling to the answer?
The patient didn't answer that question on their intake form. The submission still opens so you can see what they did answer, but there's nothing to scroll to for that section.
Why does View Intake say no intake forms were found?
The patient has never submitted an intake form. Send one from their profile — see How do I send and manage intake forms in Barti?.
Does clicking View Intake copy the patient's answer into my exam?
No. Both links are read-only shortcuts. They display information in the sidebar and never change what's recorded in the exam — you still enter your own clinical findings.
Which intake submission does View Intake open if the patient has submitted several?
Always the most recent one. Older submissions are still listed in the Intake tab and you can expand any of them manually.
Do these links appear on a printed exam?
No. They're on-screen shortcuts only and are hidden when you print a finalized exam.
Can I use these links on a finalized exam?
Yes. Both work the same way in an active exam and a finalized one.
