Who this is for: Any staff member using a Yealink desk phone or DECT handset registered with Barti VoIP.
Before you start, you'll need:
A Yealink desk phone registered with Barti VoIP (T54W, T74W, or T85W)
For desk-phone-to-desk-phone intercom: the IP address of the phone you want to reach (press OK on that phone to find it), and Intercom Allow enabled on the receiving desk phone under Menu → Features → Intercom (enabled by default on the T54W and T85W)
For handset intercom: Auto Intercom turned on for the handset — this defaults to Off, so setup won't work until you enable it. Steps are included in Method B below.
A consistent IP address for each phone. Since intercom setup relies on the phone's IP address, ask your IT provider to make sure each phone's address doesn't change after a power cycle or network reboot (for example, with a static IP or a DHCP reservation).
Note: Intercom only works between phones on the same local network — it won't reach a phone at a different location.
Method A — Intercom between two desk phones
Log into the phone's web interface by entering its IP address in your browser. (Press OK on the phone to find its IP address.)
Navigate to Dsskey → Line Key.
Find the line key you want to configure and set the following fields:
Type: Intercom
Value: the IP address of the phone you want to reach
Label: the destination phone's Label in Barti (e.g., "Front Desk") — using the same Label keeps this consistent if staff change desks
Line: Auto
Click Confirm to save.
Repeat for each phone you want to intercom.
Setup is one-directional. Only the calling phone needs the destination's IP address configured — the phone being called doesn't need any setup to receive an intercom call.
Method B — Intercom between a desk phone and its DECT handset
This method only works between a DECT handset and the base (desk) phone it's registered to. Other desk phones on the network can't reach the handset this way.
From the base phone
Log into the base phone's web interface and navigate to Dsskey → Line Key.
Find the line key you want to configure and set the following fields:
Type: DECT Intercom (the Value field will gray out — no IP address needed)
Label: a descriptive name (e.g., "Handset")
Line: the paired handset — Handset 2, Handset 3, etc., depending on how many handsets are registered to that base
Click Confirm to save.
From the handset
One-time setup — turn on Auto Intercom to receive calls:
Press the center button to open the menu.
Select Settings (gear icon).
Scroll down to Telephony (option 7) and select it.
Select Auto Intercom.
Choose On (Beep On) or On (Beep Off). This defaults to Off — the handset won't accept intercom calls from the base phone until you turn it on.
To place an intercom call to the base phone:
Press the up arrow on the navigation pad (marked with the intercom icon) to open the Intercom menu.
Select Corded Phone.
Press OK.
The Intercom menu also shows an All Handsets option. This likely intercoms every handset registered to the same base at once, but this hasn't been tested with more than one handset.**
What you'll see when it works
The receiving phone or handset beeps (twice, by default) and automatically answers to speakerphone — no one needs to pick up to hear the intercom call. On a handset, this depends on which Auto Intercom option was selected: On (Beep On) beeps before answering, while On (Beep Off) answers silently.
Troubleshooting
Can any desk phone intercom a DECT handset?
No. A DECT handset can only be reached by intercom from the base phone it's registered to. Other desk phones on the network can't reach it through this method.
My handset isn't receiving intercom calls.
Check that Auto Intercom is turned on: on the handset, go to Settings → Telephony → Auto Intercom and select On (Beep On) or On (Beep Off). This is Off by default.
The intercom call connects, but I don't hear anything.
This is expected if Intercom Mute is enabled on the receiving desk phone (under Menu → Features → Intercom — this setting is desk-phone only, not available on handsets). Intercom Mute automatically turns off your microphone the moment an incoming intercom call auto-answers, so the caller can't accidentally overhear background noise or private conversation in your room. To talk back, unmute your phone manually after the call connects.
Can an intercom call interrupt someone who's already on a call?
Only if Intercom Barge is enabled on the receiving desk phone (under Menu → Features → Intercom — also desk-phone only). With Barge on, an incoming intercom call automatically breaks through and answers even if you're on an active call — your current call is placed on hold automatically. With Barge off, an incoming intercom call is treated like a normal incoming or waiting call while you're busy.
My intercom key stopped working, but it worked before.
This usually means the destination phone's IP address changed — often after a power outage or router reboot. Press OK on the destination phone to check its current IP address, and compare it to the Value field on the calling phone's Dsskey → Line Key page. If they don't match, update the Value field, or ask your IT provider to set up a static IP or DHCP reservation so the address stays consistent going forward.
Do phones need to be on the same network to intercom each other?
Yes. Intercom relies on reaching the destination phone's IP address directly, so it only works between phones on the same local network. In testing, an intercom attempt between two phones at different locations didn't connect.
