Who this is for: All Barti users
Before you start, you'll need:
The patient's invoice open in Barti
The discount amount (dollar amount for a line item, or percentage for the whole invoice)
Steps
There are two ways to apply a discount, depending on whether you want to discount one charge or the whole invoice.
Option 1: Discount a single line item
You can apply a line-item discount two ways:
Inline:
Open the patient's invoice and locate the charge in the Charges section.
Type a dollar amount directly into the Discount field on the charge row.
Barti recalculates Patient Responsibility and Insurance Responsibility for that line item automatically.
Edit window:
Open the patient's invoice and locate the charge in the Charges section.
Click the three-dot menu to the right of the charge and select Edit.
In the window that appears, add the discount amount. Unlike the inline field, this method lets you add a description for the discount.
Click Save Changes.
Option 2: Discount the entire invoice
Open the patient's invoice.
Under the Charges section, click + Invoice Discount.
In the Add Invoice Discount window, enter a Percentage. Barti shows the patient's current Patient Balance and calculates the Estimated Discount dollar amount as you type.
Click Add Invoice Discount to apply it.
This replaces any existing line-item discounts on the invoice — Barti warns you of this in the window before you confirm.
There's no description field for an Invoice Discount.
What you'll see when it works
Line-item discount: The discounted charge's Patient Responsibility and Insurance Responsibility update immediately on that row.
Invoice Discount: There's no separate discount line added to the invoice. Instead, Barti calculates each line item's share of the percentage discount and writes that dollar amount into the line item's inline Discount field — so a 10% Invoice Discount shows up as a 10% dollar discount on every individual charge.
Troubleshooting
What's the difference between a line-item Discount and an Invoice Discount?
A line-item Discount reduces the amount owed on one specific charge. + Invoice Discount calculates a percentage of the patient's total balance and distributes it across every line item's Discount field at once.
Can I use a line-item discount and an Invoice Discount on the same invoice?
Not at the same time — applying an Invoice Discount replaces any existing line-item discounts on the invoice.
How do I remove an Invoice Discount after applying it?
There's no single button to undo it. Since the discount is written into each line item's Discount field individually, you'll need to open the three-dot menu for each affected line item and remove or clear the discount amount one at a time.
What's the difference between a Discount and an Adjustment?
A Discount reduces the billed amount upfront, before or at the time of charge. An Adjustment is typically applied as a write-off after patient and/or insurance payments are collected. See How do I make an adjustment or write-off on an invoice in Barti? for adjustments.
